Serengeti National Park

The Safari to Tanzania would be incomplete without visiting the Serengeti National Park. This is one of the unique areas in the world and one of the World Heritage Sites since 1972. With an area of 14,763 sq. km. the Park has many scenic features: Grassland savannah plains, wilderness, kopjes, over 500 species of birds etc. Nevertheless, the most outstanding feature is  its fauna. It contains the greatest remaining concentration of plains game in Africa and on a scale which has no parallel anywhere in the world.

The Serengeti is the second largest park after Ruaha National Park and of course the best park  in Tanzania and East Africa. Large herds of buffalo, groups of elephant and giraffe, and many countable numbers of topi, eland, impala, kongoni, grant’s gazelle are available for v viewing at any time of the year. The three big cats (Lions. Leopard and Cheetah can also be viewed. As usual lions are often found killing something, if not an antelope, it is a wildebeest or a zebra etc. Cheetahs are very common on the southeastern plains, while leopards can often be found resting lazily in one of the large trees alongside Seronera River.

The Great Wildebeest Migration

The Serengeti National Park is well-known for its annual wildebeest migration, when more than 2 million of wildebeest accompanied by about 500,000 Thomson gazelles and about 200,000 zebras cross the Mara river longing for fresh waters and pastures.

When to go

The park offers good wildlife viewing throughout the year. June to October is the best months for seeing the migration including Mara River Crossing and February is the best month for the wildebeest calving. The dry season start from June and end in January each year and these months are best general game viewing.
